Toyota, Kentucky State U Team to Create Toyota Engineering Scholarship

Toyota has announced its partnership with Kentucky State University, one which involves a scholarship program that will help mechanical-engineering students attending the university and, Toyota hopes, persuade them to ultimately bring their talents to their headquarters someday.

The Toyota Engineering Scholarship program will be created after the automaker served up a five-year $375,000 grant to KSU, and Toyota will be granted greater access to rising mechanical engineers who will no doubt be hungering for their big breaks once they earn their degrees.

“The auto industry in general has a shortage of talented engineers coming out of college,” said Will James, president, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc, in a press release. “Young engineers need to understand that our Georgetown plant, with its robotics, and cutting-edge technology, is the wave of the future.”

According to program details KSU will supply Toyota with five incoming freshmen who excel in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. Those students will all receive full-ride scholarships that cover three years at K State on a pre-engineering curriculum and their final two years at the University of Kentucky. Once the fifth year has concluded, they will walk away with an undergrad degree from Kentucky State, an engineering degree from UK, and—possibly—a post-collegiate job with Toyota.

During the Toyota Engineering Scholarship program, students will be mentored by Toyota employees and introduced to co-op employment/internship opportunities while they chase their certificates.

“Toyota and KSU both know that producing knowledgeable and skilled graduates means a more capable workforce, a richer economy and a stronger nation,” said Mary Evans Sias, Ph.D., president of Kentucky State University. “We appreciate Toyota’s continued support through the Toyota Engineering Scholarship program, and we expect more great things to come as a result of our work together.”

2014 Toyota Sienna Named best Family Car by Kelley Blue Book

Kelley Blue Book recently announced their “12 Best Family Cars” list for 2014, and the Toyota Sienna was honored as the Best Family Car for 2014. The Sienna was able to beat out the competition with it’s excellent versatility and family-friendly features – what more could you ask for in a family vehicle?

According to the editors at KBB.com, the amount of passenger comfort the Sienna provided was insurmountable. “With reclining captain’s chairs—including a footrest—the Sienna may be the most passenger-accommodating minivan you can buy. And, with more varied configurations than any other minivan on the market, the Toyota Sienna is the perfect family-car for more than 100,000 families each year.”

In order to earn a spot on the “12 Best Family Cars” list, the Sienna had to undergo some grueling tests, completed by both Kelley Blue Book editors and actual families. After narrowing the list from 300 vehicles to 21 semi-finalists, the comparison testing focused on the areas of safety, comfort, driving performance, room for child seats, cargo space, rear-seat entertainment, and other family-friend features.

The 2014 Sienna was one of only two minivans to earn KBB Best Family Car honors; the list also included four full-size SUVs, three small SUVs, and three sedans.

The 2014 Toyota Avalon, Camry, and Prius v were all named as semi-finalists, just missing the cut.

Toyota Is Top-Selling Automaker in the World

For the second year in a row, Toyota has secured its spot as the top-selling automaker in the world. In 2013, Toyota reported total worldwide sales of 9.98 million vehicles. This was around 270,000 more vehicles than General Motors in the number two spot and was a 2.4 percent gain over 2012 sales.

Toyota has a goal to sell more than 10 million vehicles this year, 10.32 million to be exact. This would make Toyota the first automaker ever to pass the 10 million mark in global sales. This year Toyota will be in a tight race with both GM and Volkswagen, which sold 9.5 million vehicles this year.

With great new models like the 2014 Toyota Camry, RAV4, and Highlander, we think Toyota’s crown is safe. You can give Toyota a hand and get yourself behind the wheel of a new Toyota this year. Come visit us at Hendrick Toyota Scion and find the perfect new Toyota for you.

Toyota FT-1 Concept Debut

Undoubtedly, one of the hottest cars at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit was the amazing Toyota FT-1 Concept. Toyota designers were allowed to create the ultimate sports car of their dreams.

In fact, according to Toyota, the FT-1 represents the future of Toyota’s design. The FT stands for “Future Toyota,” and the 1 indicates the first example. Kevin Hunter, Toyota’s head of design research at their Calty facility, described the FT-1 as “a spiritual pace car for a changing, evolving Toyota.”

While looking the future, the FT-1 also acknowledges the past. You can see hints of Toyota’s previous sports cars, including the 2000GT, FR-S, and Supra. The FT-1 is the answers Akio Toyoda’s challenge to design cars that make people say, “I want this!”

And, all the design aspects are not just for show. Many, if not all of the visual features have a real purpose. For example, the cuts and dips in the body look amazing, but they also direct air into the engine to help cool it down. The rear wing, which adds a true sports car look, is retractable and it automatically deploys and tilts down at high speeds to increase downforce.

While the FT-1 may just be a concept, many think it will lead to eventual Supra successor. In the mean time, you can download and drive the car in the Gran Turismo 6 video game.

How much would you love a new Toyota sports car?

Toyota Tundra’s Ability to Tow Space Shuttle Still Award-Worthy

It has been nearly a year and four months since an unmodified Toyota Tundra was able to tow the 300,000-pound Endeavour space shuttle across the Manchester Boulevard Bridge and California’s 405 Freeway, but the feat is still being awarded.

In the first year the honor was given, Toyota earned the One Club Automobile Advertising of the Year Award in the experimental advertising category for its documentation of the historic feat.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by The One Club for the campaign capturing Toyota Tundra’s historic achievement,” said Jack Hollis, vice president of marketing for Toyota, in a press release. “The monumental Tundra Endeavour tow truly launched an exciting new direction for Toyota and helped introduce our ‘Let’s Go Places’ movement.”

The distinction was awarded to Toyota at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and recognized a 20-year partnership between Toyota and the California Science Center (the Endeavour’s current home) to raise awareness for the space program while educating the public.

Toyota Launches All-New 2014 Highlander; Preps for Exports and Hybrids

The highly anticipated 2014 Toyota Highlander has finally rolled of the assembly line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI) and will soon arrive at Hendrick Toyota, and although we are ecstatic for the arrival of the next-generation of Toyota’s family-hauler, it doesn’t compare the enthusiasm held by those in Indiana.

Production of the all-new 2014 Highlander was brought a $430 million investment and 600 new jobs to the Princeton, Indiana plant, and production is showing no signs of slowing down, as Toyota plans to begin creating the Highlander Hybrid soon and will bolster production to export out of the US.

“The all-new Highlander is a dynamic, stylish SUV and its quality craftsmanship and the fact that it will be exported to the Russian and Australian markets is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team members,” TMMI President Norm Bafunno said in a press release.  “This really is a milestone for our entire team.”

The completely redesigned 2014 Toyota Highlander will soon be available at Hendrick Toyota Scion Concord, so visit us today to learn more about the all-new SUV!

Hybrid Family Leads Toyota to Record European Sales

Ever since its introduction of the Prius to the market in 1997, Toyota has been enjoying international success as the leading automaker in hybrid technology, especially in its home country of Japan as well as the United States.

Now, Toyota is also seeing increased sales performance in Europe and Russia, where its hybrid vehicles have been leaping in popularity. After record-high sales this year, hybrid vehicles now account for 20% of the brand’s European sales, marking an increase of about 13% from last year. This has helped Toyota double its year-earlier third-quarter profit to approximately $193 million and even gain another point of market share in the continent.

Thanks to these higher sales, Toyota’s factories in France, the UK, and Turkey are running at full capacity and have pushed the company into the top 10 best-selling automakers in Europe. Back at home, however, Toyota is still the leading manufacturer in hybrid and non-hybrid automobiles. Come find these at Hendrick Toyota!
